Habbatul Mahabbah
The Grain of Love

Habbatul Mahabbah, The Grain of Love is a 16th century manuscript by Sheikh Mahmoud bin Fadl-Allah Al-Uskudari. In this short tract, Al-Uskudari discusses love, its degrees, its states and its stations in three chapters:

  1. On Loving God ﷻ
  2. On Loving the Messenger of God ﷺ
  3. On Love of the Family of the Prophet ﷺ and his Kin, may God be pleased with them all.

The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre has made available for the first time ever in one book a complete English translation of Habbatul Mahabbah with the original Arabic. May it serve as means for Remembrance of God ﷻ and His Beloved Prophet ﷺ.

About the author:

The sheikh and mystic Aziz Mahmoud ibn Fadl-Allah al-Qustantini al-Uskudari, also known as Mahmud Hudayi, was born in Şereflikoçhisar, Turkey around 955 AH (1548 CE). He was a Hanafi jurist, poet, judge, and one of the most prominent sheikhs of the Jelveti Sufi tariqa. He has a zawiya in Üsküdar that bears his name in which he is buried. He was the sheikh of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I and was the first to lead the Friday prayers in the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. He served as a judge in Edirne, Bursa, Egypt, and the Levant. He was well-known for his piety and moral fortitude. He wrote approximately 30 books in Arabic and Turkish. He died in Üsküdar in the year 1038 AH (1628 CE). May Allah have mercy upon him.
